The Crow

Every month, just before my period, I get an overwhelming feeling of being unlovable. I'm glad I decided to spend this evening with what seemed to be the most unlovable film of the summer, and to no surprise, we were a match made in the NetherRealm.

I understand the original movie is highly regarded and can never be replaced. I've only seen it twice but it made no lasting impression on me... As soon as stepped outside of the house, the rain came crashing down. I grabbed hold of my katana shaped umbrella and enjoyed the sounds of the thunder as I walked through the city in the rain. Voices filling my head telling me how awful everything was. How awful I was...This is Vincent's power in the movie and it was so emotional to see how I felt visually displayed on screen. A voice that you can't escape. I voice that eats at you and wants to see you on your knees in the dirt.

I couldn't tell you if this was a remake or reimagining, but it was everything I wanted. I loved the dialogue, performances, luscious cinematography, costumes, production design and the music. It was a beautiful reminder that I exist in both worlds. If you know me, you'll know how much I like to talk to crows and other creatures. I'm not a fan of Bill Skarsgård, however, seeing him be so vulnerable and soft in this was beautiful. And of course, the main reason I came to see this, was because of FKA Twigs. She really does have a certain aura about her (as stated in the film), and delivers such a soft and sensual performance. So grateful for this tonight, after watching two mediocre films over the past week (including Alien: Romulus). I adored Eric and Shelly, and there wasn't a performance that I didn't like.

The Crow (2024) is a fine addition to my favourite films of the year. The rage in this film resonated with me so deeply. To love, to lose, to let go. We die so many times, but how many times do we get to love? To live?

Favourite dialogue: When I'm hard to love, love me a little harder...
