I watched Dune: Part 2 on opening day in London last Friday. A lot got in the way between then and me writing down some thoughts. Keeping mind, I plan on seeing this at least two more times on the big screen.
I was very surprised when Dune: Part 1 leapt to my top 3 films of all time. I remember that feeling...like...my life had changed. Sequels and additional parts of films are rarely good or better, however part 2 delivers so much which is why I feel additional viewings are absolutely necessary. The additional cast all lend a wealth of soul to the story. The score is sparse, which for me meant the film was less still and meditative as the first part often was, however this film called for action and I am glad that the score was not used heavy handedly. At times some scenes felt rushed, as in, I wanted them to play out more slowly, and at other times some events just happened, with no clear indication of how we got to that point. I am hoping that a 4-5 hour director's cut will fix those complaints for me, as I can be understanding about the already almost 3 hours runtime in movie theatres.
I found myself aligned with an unlikely character, which allowed me to explore aspects of myself deeper after the viewing - so lots of heavy mirror rituals and communing with the ether. I would like to recommend the fantastic book King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine for those who might have an opinion or two on Paul's character and other leaders in this film (and the men in your life/your masculine counterpart to your feminine.)
I was really pleased how much more explicit the Middle-Eastern influences were in this film with the language, costume design, and veils used. I really enjoyed references to ancient Egyptian terminology too. I'm extremely excited to see what comes next to honour Frank Herbert's extraordinary and soulful contribution to the world.
Thank you to my film student, Barbara, from last year who got me a cinema gift card. I finally used it for something really special 🙏🏽🖤
